Expanding on the popular “Flow of Seasons” series, Grand Seiko has announced two new models in the Elegance Collection: references SBGW281 and SBGW287. These classically styled timepieces, like the SBGW283 and SBGW285 unveiled in the Spring of 2022, feature compact dimensions, dynamic dials, and an overall design that pulls from Grand Seiko’s history.
The stainless steel case of SBGW281 and SBGW287 measure just 37.3mm in diameter, 11.7mm in thickness, and 44.3mm in length with a lug width of 19mm. With Grand Seiko’s exacting Zaratsu technique utilized throughout, the case shines with a distortion-free mirror polish that reflects the elegance of its design. The crown is ample in size, allowing for easy winding of the manual 9S64 caliber within. An eye-catching box-shape sapphire crystal sits atop the case as a call back to vintage acrylic crystals, but with the added benefit of being highly scratch-resistant.
Like prior “Flow of Seasons” models, the two timepieces here feature finely textured organic dials, inspired by the delicate changes in the four seasons that the Takumi feel at the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi. Both references feature razor-sharp hour and minute dauphine hands along with diamond-cut polished indexes.
SBGW281 Bantō
The light tones of SBGW281 evoke Bantō, the transition of seasons from winter to spring. Specifically, the color of the dial is inspired by the gradual warming of the sunlight, the trees, and the soil that appear when the snow starts to melt.
SBGW287 Boshū
SBGW287 captures the essence of Boshū, or when the seasons shift from autumn to winter. The color of the dial is informed by the beautiful scenery of the transition of seasons when the trees shed their deep red leaves.
Housed inside the case and visible through an exhibition case back is caliber 9S64, a manual-wind movement with an accuracy rating of -3 to +5 seconds per day and 72 hours of duration. 9S64 showcases Grand Seiko’s long-held expertise in creating exceptional movements in terms of functionality, reliability, and finishing. Case in point, the large gear train bridge provides the movement with much stability and strength, while also giving the caliber its beautiful appearance.
Both references SBGW281 and SBGW287 will be available on November 2022 at Grand Seiko Boutiques and Grand Seiko authorized retailers in the U.S.
